Mission Statement
The mission of the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance is to eliminate substandard housing by providing safe, affordable rental units in a stable neighborhood to families of farmworkers and other extremely low income residents of Immokalee.
Organizational Overview
The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance (IFHA) was formed after hurricane Irma devastated many of what were already substandard rental units for farmworkers. A group of concerned advocates from multiple organizations met to put together a plan to build safe, affordable rental housing for those most in need. Within the first year, IFHA was offered a 10-acre tract of land at one-half market price in a central Immokalee location. A building plan was created, and authorization was received from the Collier County Planning Commission. Funding for this self-sustaining project will come from foundations, grants and individuals. Upon completion of the project, IFHA will have placed a minimum of 128 farmworker and other low-income families in safe and affordable 2 or 3 bedroom rental units that will be hurricane proof up to 180 mph, with a community center housing pre and after school education; health, legal and job counseling; an athletic facility; and adult education. IFHA’s Board consists of representatives of Immokalee farmworkers, local church/community organizations and committed individuals. Other Immokalee housing organizations such Habitat for Humanity and Rural Neighborhoods have also voiced their support for this initiative.
