More than 49% of Immokalee's residents live in poverty. When rent consumes more than half of household income, there is not enough left over for food, medicine, and clothing. Farm-worker families living year-round in Immokalee struggle to afford the high rents charged for old, dilapidated and over-crowded trailers that will not withstand the next hurricane. The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance, Inc, a Florida not-for-profit, was founded on the belief that the people who harvest the food we eat deserve the opportunity to live and raise their families in safe, secure and affordable homes. IFHA's mission is to build a neighborhood of 128 affordable, safe rental units for families of farm-workers and other extremely low income residents of Immokalee.
