It is unusual in Southwest Florida to find an area with so many original structures and so many families who can trace their ancestors back to settlements here in the late 1800’s. The Everglades Society for Historic Preservation, Inc., (ESHP) aims to raise awareness of our unique history and of our wealth of historic buildings. ESHP has taken on the challenge of rehabilitating one of Collier County's historic structures. The Bank of Everglades moved into the Bank of Everglades Building in 1927. Barron Gift Collier had the building built so that Collier County's first bank would leave an impression on all those who conducted business in the area. ESHP has obtained the bank as a donation. After years of neglect, a hurricane and a flood, the building is in disrepair. However, a comprehensive structural analysis has determined that the building can be saved, and we are moving forward with plans to bring the building back so that future generations can enjoy this beautiful structure. We are seeking support from all Collier County residents/visitors who wish to help rehabilitate the first county bank building which was erected in 1927. Donations are greatly appreciated. For the past year since we received the Bank Building, ESHP has been hosting fundraising events as well as applying for federal, state and county grants. Thank you for your interest in our heritage!
