Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

    Organizational Overview

Habitat Collier’s primary objective is to serve the need for affordable homeownership for those unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage due to low wages. Affordable housing has been a critical need in our community for a very long time but it has never been as urgent as it is today in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Habitat Collier is one of the oldest and highest producing Habitat affiliates in the U.S. building between 85- 100 homes each year for nearly two decades. Unfortunately this is not enough to satisfy the need. More than 1,100 families inquire each year about whether they qualify to purchase a Habitat home. Most are forced to return to their untenable, substandard living conditions. For those families who successfully complete the rigorous application process, the quality of life dramatically improves for every family member once they move into their Habitat home. Parents no longer work multiple jobs to afford exorbitant rent. They no longer need to constantly worry that the landlord, who neglects to make any repairs or improvements on their dwelling, will once again raise the rent forcing them to move and uproot their children from schools. In a Habitat home, children and parents have sufficient space and privacy. They are no longer forced to share one bedroom where parents and children sleep in a room filled with their few possessions. In a Habitat home, children have their own room. For some, this is the first time they have a bed of their own. They have quiet space to rest and do their school work. In a Habitat community, the children have playgrounds and green space to play safely. Often this is the first time that parents allow their children to play outside having finally escaped rental units where space is limited but, more importantly, crime and violence persist. A Habitat home provides a family with strength, stability and security at an affordable cost.
